WRITER'S NOTEBOOK:
You're expected to keep a writer's notebook this semester full of your free-writes and journal entries. Please date each one! You'll be graded occasionally on these and you'll turn them in at the end each semester for an assessment grade. I prefer you use a googledoc to do your writing, however, a composition book is also acceptable!

UNIT ONE: ELEMENTS OF STORY AND INTRO TO THE COURSE
1. Free write: In your opinion, what does it mean for the Bible to be viewed as literature?
Let's read through this, then discuss:
What Makes the Bible Literature?
http://bibleasliterature.wordpress.com/lesson-1/
2. Class discussion: What are the parts of a story?
Let's read through these websites and then discuss:
How Bible Stories Work:
http://bibleasliterature.wordpress.com/lesson-2/
Types of Bible Stories:
http://bibleasliterature.wordpress.com/lesson-3/
3. Free write: List the elements of a great story, then pick ONE of your answers and argue why and how it is the most important part of making a story great.
4. Watch this video: http://www.theatlantic.com/video/index/374941/what-makes-a-story-great/
5. Free write: The greatest story I have ever heard, read, or watched was ______________ and why?
6. Discuss: "types" of stories.
7. Free write: "If you watched a movie about a guy who wanted a Volvo and worked for years to get it, you wouldn't cry at the end when he drove off the lot, testing the windshield wipers. You wouldn’t tell your friends you saw a beautiful movie or go home and put a record on to think about the story you’d seen. The truth is, you wouldn’t remember that movie a week later, except you’d feel robbed and want your money back. Nobody cries at the end of a movie about a guy who wants a Volvo." - Donald Miller
Turn this into a good story where we would cry at the end. Write the story or summarize in detail how you would create empathy.
8. Discuss: character transformation.
9. Free write: Read the following handout and the quote below and then make a claim about character or self transformation. A claim is an opinion of yours. Back up your claim with a warrant and evidence (this means to prove your opinion with facts, examples, etc).
"If the point of life is the same as the point of a story, the point of life is character transformation." - Donald Miller

Unit Assessment: Write a chiasm type poem or short story based on your ideas you free-wrote about in our discussion of the Two Adams OR about one of the stories we read in Genesis 1-9.
